Every time I begin working on a new series, I have mixed feelings. Being held by what I’ve already started mixed with being impelled by what I want to do next. Melancholy mixed with excitement. Curiosity mixed with worry. Delight mixed with feeling vulnerable. Do you ever feel that way when you start something new? I haven’t yet… Continue reading Threads of Continuity
Body of Work
I’m enjoying the way the season has turned this week — brilliant sunlight alternates with rainy skies and cold, dark evenings. In my studio the sun is lower through the skylight. On rainy days, I’m forced to use the overhead light. At night, I can see a few stars in the black rectangle above my work table. The colors of the season are turning up on my canvases. Darker colors– blacks, metallics, crimson, blood-red, forest greens. Richer for the changing light.
Finding Balance in My Life
One of my challenges continues to be finding balance in my life. Most folks who have started their own businesses know, that you pretty much have to work 60 hour weeks or more in the beginning. At the gallery, we not only represent our own art (mine and my husband Tim’s) we also took on 14 other artists in the first year — and are expanding to representing a total of 18 to 20 artists in the next two years. That’s alot of responsibility for me to promote and sell their art, and to help them in their careers.
1+1=1 Gallery is Moving – and having a Big Sale
Thank you to everyone who has become a collector of our art, who has come in to 1+1=1 Gallery to look, appreciate, help, buy, and just visit, get/give hugs. We couldn’t have done 11 months without you!
Now we are asking for your help and support again. This time we need cash flow to remodel our new gallery down the street. Purchase framed, numbered archival prints from our gallery during the month of September for 20% off. You can save between $70 and $140 and we raise money to help us fix up our new space. Cool!
Home is Where the Art Is … New Exhibit at 1+1=1
Home is Where the Art Is. 1+1=1 Gallery announces a new, exciting woodworking exhibit on April 4th, of smaller, functional art by four Montana woodworkers: Tim Carney, Dave Carlson, Jim Hill and Phil Pontillo. Whether you are furnishing your home with one-of-a-kind necessities, looking for something cool and unusual to give to a loved one, or trying to find the perfect Mother’s Day gift, you’ll find a variety of unique, affordable wood art at this exhibit.
Wild Horses and our Naturally Wild Souls
We decided to gather for an evening of art making and camaraderie every month. Something artsy. Something to connect us. To each other. To our souls. To the Earth. Last night we made horses and gave some of them to Whitney, who is going to be giving birth any day now. Her little boy will be born in the Year of the Horse. He will have a herd wild horses to remind him of his naturally wild joy. With a mama like Whitney we know he’ll grow up snorting with laughter, jumping with glee and letting his wildness out into the world.
Love Dogs? How about Sled Dogs?

There are two exhibits by Maureen Shaughnessy at the gallery this month: Ancient Bond, an exhibit of sled dogs portraits emphasizing the dogs’ personalities and the bond with their handlers and mushers… and Charlie’s Closet, select portraits of Charlie putting up with being dressed up in human clothes. The gallery is located in Helena Montana at 335 North Last Chance Gulch.
